Death of Breda pub figure Ger Couvreur

Ger Couvreur, the former operator of café ’t Tapperijke on Breda’s Grote Markt and a carnival performer, died on Monday evening. Reports disagreed on his age, giving it as either 81 or 82.

Couvreur had run the pub for nearly 40 years and was known for playing melodies on bottles above the bar with drumsticks. He also performed the carnival song “De Hat”. He transferred the pub to Michel van der Gijp and his wife in November 2022, but continued to perform during the following carnival season.
