Council of State allows Emmeloord housing plans to proceed

Residents of Rietstraat in Emmeloord were unable to prevent part of a popular playing field from being used for two planned courtyards with new housing blocks. The Council of State rejected their objections, allowing the demolition, construction and renovation plans in the district to continue. Residents had argued that the field was the social heart of the neighbourhood and that its partial loss could damage community cohesion.
The Council of State said the Noordoostpolder municipal council was entitled to give greater weight to housing than to fully preserving the playing field, noting that sufficient green space would remain for sports and play. It also found the participation process careful and said full support was not legally required. Demolition of rental homes in the northern part of Rietstraat is expected to begin in spring 2029, with new construction scheduled to start six months later. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2030.
