Competing uses of space along the North Sea Canal
◆1 source
The second episode of a series marking 150 years of the North Sea Canal examines how housing, industry and nature coexist along the canal as available space becomes increasingly scarce. New homes are being built while industrial sites and natural areas also require room. Anton Kos, who worked his entire career at a shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord, continues to train young employees after retiring. He has seen the area around the NDSM site change as more residents move in, many of whom are unfamiliar with activity at the shipyard. Photographer Lillianne Kuijt from IJmuiden documents Tata Steel employees, whom she believes receive too little attention, and finds tranquillity in Spaarnwoude after work. For her, industry and nature belong together.
