A flight disaster in Apeldoorn in which 22 schoolchildren and a pilot died was commemorated in the city. Speeches were given and children laid wreaths at a monument. The accident occurred on October 7, 1946, when a pilot flying a military aircraft struck the chimney of the Christian HBS, now the Christian Lyceum. The aircraft’s fuel tank came loose and the plane crashed onto the gymnasium roof, where 27 students were exercising. The resulting fire killed 22 of them and the pilot. The pilot’s mother, who lived nearby and went to the school after the crash, died of a heart attack.
