Rook Lips was told by his doctor that cancer was growth without direction. After his close friend Paul Verhaeghe also received a cancer diagnosis, the two wrote new books about their experiences and the effects of unchecked growth on support systems.

Lips said that people change only because of a fundamental crisis.
