Brabant falls short of its forest expansion targets

Brabant aimed to plant 13,000 hectares of new forest and renovate 60,000 hectares of existing forest from 2020 onward, but between 2020 and 2024 it planted 1,800 hectares and renovated 3,400 hectares. The province had expected funding from the national government and European climate and nature programmes, but that funding fell short. The cost is estimated at an average of €22,000 per hectare for new forest and €10,000 per hectare for renovation, although the province cannot provide a precise figure for the shortfall.
The national government has made €56 million available for nature conservation, of which Brabant will receive €7.5 million; the province is adding a further €6 million from other budgets. Brabant says this will only partly bridge the shortfall in 2027 and is not enough to meet its targets. Deputy for Nature Hagar Roijackers said the province is mainly looking to the national government for further funding and warned that delays could lead to further forest deterioration, biodiversity loss and tree mortality.
