On World Girls Day, European Parliament member Assita Kanko said that girls were being abused and married off without the wider public addressing it. She said that about one in five girls worldwide married before turning 18, amounting to more than 12 million girls each year, and argued that they often could not choose their spouses. Kanko also criticized the political left for remaining silent on the issue.
