Security lockdown ahead of electoral-roll protest in New Delhi

5 sources

Police have sealed off parts of New Delhi ahead of a planned youth protest over changes to voter lists. Metro stations are closed, mobile internet has been suspended and officers are searching buses at entry points to the city for protesters. Demonstrators say the revisions could prevent millions of people from voting and accuse the Modi government of seeking to entrench its position. A single report said that the Election Commission had removed about 130 million names from the electoral register over the previous year. Earlier protests over the issue led to police detaining opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, according to one report.
