A fire broke out in an apartment building on De Helling in Zaandam on Thursday morning, reportedly caused by a bicycle battery being charged. Three residents were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke, and two cats were brought to safety.

The fire was extinguished that morning. One apartment was evacuated, and neighbours were advised to keep windows and doors closed and switch off mechanical ventilation because of smoke.
