Cyclist injured in collision at Aalsmeer roundabout as redesign remains uncertain

A cyclist was hit by a car on a roundabout along the Burgemeester Kasteleinweg in Aalsmeer and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The person’s condition is unknown. The collision came almost a year after a 77-year-old cyclist died at the roundabout near the Van Cleeffkade, prompting calls for improvements.
A promised redesign has not yet been completed. The municipality is preparing an investigation into the safest alternative with the Amsterdam Transport Region and the province of Noord-Holland; it hopes the investigation can begin by the end of the year. The outcome will determine whether the roundabout is completely rebuilt, while the current layout remains a possible option. Thresholds and strips have been installed as interim measures. The municipality says speeds and the number of accidents have fallen, although 36 cyclist accidents have been recorded at the roundabouts in recent years.
