Almere budget adds funding for security and culture amid major savings

Almere’s new municipal budget provides additional funding for street safety and culture, while requiring substantial savings in other areas. The budget was drawn up by the coalition of PRO, VVD, D66, CDA and Leefbaar Almere under the agreement “Almere Vooruit”. Concerns remain about the city’s financial future. Of the €1.8 million allocated for security, funding will go to training more municipal enforcement officers, who are intended to become more visible on the streets. The municipality also wants each neighborhood to have its own permanent district enforcement officer. The investment followed Mayor Hein van der Loo’s call for an additional €10 million for a structural approach to safety, including juvenile crime; that call was only partly taken up.
