Vlieland reconsiders the naming of a lane after Albert Kikkert

The municipality of Vlieland is taking another close look at the naming of a lane after Albert Kikkert, a sailor born on Vlieland in 1761. A name change has not been ruled out. Kikkert, who was involved in slaveholding on Curaçao, has become controversial there. On Curaçao, his grave has faded and his bust is partly obscured by palm trees. He was once regarded as a celebrated sea hero but is now increasingly out of the picture because of his role in slavery.
