Clingendael researcher Pieter Zwaan had earlier this year mapped the Netherlands’ food stocks. On Monday, he said his warning about empty shelves appeared to be borne out when Albert Heijn stores had empty shelves within a day. He said he was surprised the supermarket chain had no backup supplies.
